Is Wix good for SEO? An honest answer for 2026

Platforms4 min readPublished 9 October 2026

Wix gives you the technical SEO basics out of the box. Whether you rank depends on what you build on top of them.

"Is Wix bad for SEO?" is one of the most common questions we hear from business owners. The reputation comes from Wix's early years. Today the platform covers the technical basics well, and what decides your rankings is how the site is planned, written and built.

Can Google crawl and index a Wix site properly?

Yes. Wix says its SEO infrastructure is built on server-side rendering, so search engines receive complete HTML pages rather than a blank page that has to be built with JavaScript. Every Wix site also gets an automatic sitemap, an editable robots.txt file and an SSL certificate.

Which SEO settings can you control on Wix?

On each page you can edit:

  • Title tag and meta description, the words shown in search results.
  • URL slug, so pages have short, readable addresses.
  • Canonical tag, to tell Google which version of a page is the main one.
  • Robots meta tag, to keep thank-you pages or duplicates out of search.
  • Structured data, which Wix adds automatically to products, events and blog posts and lets you customise with your own JSON-LD.
  • Open Graph tags, which control how pages look when shared on social media.

Developers can go further with Velo, Wix's coding platform, which can change meta tags, link tags and structured data from code. That is useful for large dynamic sites such as directories and listings.

Is Wix slow?

Wix is not fast or slow on its own. Speed depends on how the site is built. On Wix, the most common causes of slow pages are too many third-party apps, very large images, heavy video backgrounds and long pages packed with animations. A carefully built Wix Studio site can score well on Core Web Vitals; an overloaded one will not, on any platform.

What are the real SEO limitations of Wix?

  • Less control over hosting and code. You cannot change the server or install any plugin you like, which matters mainly for very large or unusual sites.
  • Template habits. Many Wix sites rank poorly because they were built from a template with thin, generic text, not because of the platform.
  • App weight. Each installed app can add scripts. Keep only the apps you use.
  • A paid plan is needed. Free sites use a Wix subdomain and show Wix branding, which is not suitable for a business.

How do you make a Wix site rank?

  1. Connect your own domain and complete Wix's SEO setup checklist, including Google Search Console.
  2. Write a unique title, meta description and single H1 for every page, built around what customers search for.
  3. Create one page per service and location you want to rank for, rather than one long services page.
  4. Compress images and remove apps you do not use.
  5. Publish helpful articles that answer real customer questions, and link them to your service pages.
  6. Earn links and reviews from relevant sites, directories and partners.

Our SEO service follows this order for every site we work on.

When is a custom build the better choice for SEO?

A fully custom build or Wix Headless makes sense when you need a unique front end, very fast pages or functionality that standard templates cannot offer. For most service businesses, consultants and small stores, a well-built Wix Studio site ranks just as well. Our article What Wix Headless means for growing brands explains the options.

What do we recommend?

If your team wants a site that is simple to run, Wix is a solid choice for SEO, as long as it is built with clear structure, real content and good performance. As Wix-certified designers and developers, we build Wix Studio and Velo sites with search in mind from the first wireframe.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wix good for SEO?
Yes. Wix uses server-side rendering, generates a sitemap and robots.txt, and lets you edit titles, descriptions, URLs, canonical tags and structured data on every page.
Can a Wix site rank on the first page of Google?
Yes. A Wix site can rank when it has useful content that matches search intent, a fast mobile experience and links from other relevant sites, the same as any other platform.
Do self-hosted platforms rank better than Wix?
Not by default. Self-hosted platforms give more control over code and hosting, which helps very large content sites, but most small business sites can rank just as well on Wix.
Do I need a paid Wix plan for SEO?
For a business site, yes. A paid plan lets you connect your own domain and remove Wix branding, both of which matter for trust and search visibility.
